    • App situation is dire
    • Microsoft Maps is 'Apple Maps bad'
    • Call quality is subpar

    Conclusion
Lumia 950 feels like a public beta test before Microsoft launches the long-rumored "Surface Phone." It's an incomplete picture that doesn't quite deserve the Surface name, as much as I like the operating system underneath and some of its enterprise features.Of course, this more than enough for Windows Phone 8.1 users to upgrade to the Windows 10 Mobile flagship's debut. Seeing that attractive Live Tiles design on the phone and then, in less than a few seconds, transitioning to the desktop-like mode via Continuum is a dream come true. Phones are finally acting like computers in a way Apple and Google have barely tried.Continuum needs to be fleshed out, and so does the app count, camera, battery life and phone call quality. Again, there's a lot of work to be done. The Lumia 950 and Windows 10 Mobile feel like the first stepping stones before Microsoft dials it up to, say, Windows 11 Mobile.

    • Bristande apputbud
    • Buggig mjukvara
    • Dålig högtalare

    Slutsats

  • Microsoft Lumia 950

    Plus

    • Microsoft's Lumia 950 takes good pictures, has a crystal clear screen and a removable battery. The Cortana voice assistant and offline maps remain perks.

    Minus

    • Windows phones still have a huge app deficit compared to iPhone and Android. The 950's standout Continuum feature is buggy and cumbersome, and requires separate hardware to use. The phone's ho-hum design feels dated.

    Conclusion
The Lumia 950 is a mostly average smartphone, giving iPhone and Android users no reason to switch, and offering little appeal outside Windows phone diehards.

  • Microsoft Lumia 950

    Plus

    • Excellent desktop Continuum mode
    • Slick home screen design
    • Great camera (when it works properly)

    Minus

    • Very buggy
    • Missing many big-name apps
    • Other apps lack features found in their Android and iOS counterparts

    Conclusion
The Lumia 950 smartphone shows how Microsoft can integrate the mobile and desktop experience, but it also shows how the company is way behind iOS and Android in third-party support.

  • Microsoft Lumia 950 review: The dawn of Windows 10 Mobile

    Plus

    • Cameras
    • Some nice Window 10 features
    • Removable battery
    • Decent display

    Minus

    • Windows 10 littered with inconsistencies
    • Sometimes unstable
    • Iris scanner dazzling
    • App space not competitive against Android and iOS
    • Bland design

Conclusion The Microsoft Lumia 950 perhaps isn't the flagship handset that many were expecting. Sitting in that convenient size at 5.2-inches, it may be a more natural choice over the 950 XL's 5.7-inch size. There's a good display on this phone, paired with hardware that offers plenty of power and a camera experience that's competitive. But the design doesn't shout flagship, it shouts perfunctory. There's little of interest, there's no colour choices, there's little to turn heads. In a line-up of current flagships, the Lumia 950 succeeds in being the least noteworthy when it comes to design. For someone given this as a work phone that might not matter, as it sits in the hand well enough, and maintains the advantage of offering a removable battery. At the same time, Windows 10 Mobile doesn't really feel like a reinvention and it doesn't feel like it's going to propel Windows Phone back into a premium position. The Lumia 950 offers the same software charms as its predecessors in Live Tiles, Glance Screen and a few others, but the software is littered with inconsistencies and odd design choices. The vaulted Continuum might be a clever addition, but we can't really see how it fits in the real consumer world in contrast with Microsoft's connected OneDrive strategy, and the iris scanner employed by Windows Hello is dazzling to the point of being uncomfortable. The Microsoft Lumia 950 doesn't feel like a glittering showcase of the future of Microsoft mobile devices. It's a poor cousin to the Surface, something that seems adequately conceived rather than brilliantly executed. Its strengths are that camera and the £419 asking price, but Windows needs to go Surface-style pro in the phone market to take on the burgeoning competition.

  • Microsoft Lumia 950 review

Conclusion Windows 10 has arrived on smartphones and we're not exactly blown away. Loyal Windows and Windows Phone users will appreciate features like Universal Apps and while Continuum appears to be a real wow features, it requires a lot of extra equipment. The OS is buggy, too. The Lumia 950 itself offers some decent hardware, namely the screen, inside an uninspiring design. Unless you're set on the OS, there is a lot better on the market and for less money.

    Microsoft Lumia 950

While I have seen Windows Phones in the past the new Lumia 950 is the first for a while. In theory, as a Windows desktop user of various versions from 3.1 to 10, this should make me feel right at home after those initial problems we all face with a new phone.
