    Conclusion
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the perfect device for those who think that some of the leading smartphones are just too big, but still want the best specs on the market. Those top-end innards crammed into a smaller device means high-end power isn't missing for those with smaller hands, or if you want something more akin to the iPhone 5S.Sony has addressed a lot of the problems that were found on the original Xperia Z1, and has created a superb handset in doing so. The screen doesn't suffer from the same poor viewing angles the Z1's did, although it will never be able to live up to the size and resolutions that modern flagships pack in.A lot of focus will also be on the camera, and rightly so. The Xperia Z1 Compact's camera will often leave you wondering what the point of the traditional compact camera is, unless you plan to take a lot of photos inside or at night. It's a shame that potential of this 20.1MP Bionz / Exmor RS sensor isn't fully exploited - I was actually left rather confused as to why it can result in such noisy and muddy pictures. Were it not for that (and the overbearing services Sony is pushing, which don't really add a lot) this would be an almost perfect phone, especially for a segment crying out for something like this. But here's the upshot: the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was the best phone the Japanese company had ever produced - it's been bettered since then with the Z3 Compact, but the bar this raised still remains mostly intact. It's attacked a segment of the market that's been underloved very well, and done it at an almost-perfect price point. The Z1 Compact is a phone with the prowess of all that Sony has to offer but in a package a lot of people will love, and as far as mini smartphones go it is only bettered by its successor, the Xperia Z3 Compact.First reviewed: January 2014

The Z1 Compact isn't perfect but it's still very good, a top-end smartphone in a smaller package

  • Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

    Plus

    • Its small size makes it comfortable to use, it has a searingly powerful processor, a good camera and decent battery life. It looks brilliant too and its waterproof design means you don't need to worry about dropping it in the bath.

    Minus

    • It's not running the latest version of Android and some of Sony's software tweaks don't really add anything to the experience.

    Conclusion
With its powerful processor, great camera, decent screen and gorgeous, waterproof design, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the best small Android phone around.

    Plus

    • Flagship specs in small body
    • Great camera
    • Waterproof

    Minus

    • Ordinary looking

ConclusionSony has achieved something special with the Xperia Z1 Compact. The company has created an excellent phone — first. Then its added wonderful features to it, like the high resolution camera, exquisite display and its I’m-not-scared-of-water attitude. By no means is it disadvantaged by its smaller size; this simply makes it more enjoyable to use every day.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review

    Plus

Sleek but rugged design, powerful performance, great camera, above average battery

    Minus

Screen can look slightly washed out, runs using older Android version

ConclusionPowered by a top-end, quad-core processor and featuring the best camera we've experienced on an Android smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the best smartphone in its class. But the perks come with a premium £450 price tag.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review

Conclusion We love what Sony has done with the Xperia Z1 Compact. Finally consumers have the choice to buy a high-end smartphone without being forced to use a large screen. The fact it's cheaper than most flagship devices makes it one of the best smartphones around.

    Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review

    Plus

    • Design works at this size
    • Plenty of power
    • Excellent battery performance
    • Great display and viewing angles

    Minus

    • Prone to scratching
    • Launches on Android 4.3 and software hasn't moved on very far

Conclusion The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact defies convention by offering power in a compact form and side-stepping the race to offer the largest display. The result is one of the best Android smartphones around. It betters the larger-scale Xperia Z1 in most areas: it's better to use because it fits nicely into the hand, the battery life is great, it doesn't run as hot, and the screen's viewing angles are superb. And where it doesn't better it drafts in the same water-proof design and top-tier power as its bigger brother handset. Most competitor devices force you to go large to get the latest hardware and power, but the Z1 Compact doesn't.READ: The best smartphones available to buy todayAs a result the Compact doesn't come cheap, however, but importantly it's more affordable than the regular Z1 that it betters, as well as most of the other top-tier Android devices. That will give it plenty of appeal, despite there being a tier of more affordable devices beneath it too. There are just a few minor niggles that hold it back from perfection: the software feels like it could do with an update and we feel this needs to happen fast, because as 2014 progresses there will be a lot more devices landing with new features and a newer version of Android. Sony needs to update to stay ahead of the pack. We also somehow scratched the tempered glass screen.Sony has got the Xperia Z1 Compact right: it's packed with power, is well designed, and delivers a first class experience. We have no reservations in recommending it because it's certainly the best Android device at this size.(Review originally published 29 January 2014, updated 18 February 2014.)
