    Minus

    • Loads of Sony bloatware

    • Erratic screen technology

    Conclusion
The Xperia Z1 is another all-round great phone from Sony, just like the Xperia Z it replaced and the Xperia Z2 which has just taken over at the top of the pile.It has a superb display at times, a large battery that easily sails through a day of hardcore use, and one of the best cameras we've seen on a mobile phone for both stills, 1080p capture and clever AR and live streaming toys. The issue here though is the Sony Xperia Z1 has already been replaced - by the Xperia Z2 - so if you want the latest and greatest from Sony you're best off avoiding the Z1.If your budget doesn't quite stretch that far then take a look at the Z1 Compact, which has the same power and camera but a smaller, more manageable display. To be honest, the Z1 is a little out of place in today's market. It really needs a price drop to keep it relevant.First reviewed: September 2013

Great build quality, huge performance and an impressive screen, but its camera lets the Z1 down

  • Sony Xperia Z1 S

    Plus

    • has a striking, waterproof design, a fast processor, and a feature-packed camera that takes quality pictures.

    Minus

    • The Xperia Z1S' screen pales in comparison with other flagship smartphones' displays. The handset’s glass chassis feels slippery and collects prints and smudges easily.

    Conclusion
The Xperia Z1S is the most impressive smartphone Sony has ever sold on any carrier, but an inferior screen makes Samsung's Galaxy handsets better deals.

    Ease-of-use: 8/10
    Image quality: 7/10
    Value for money: 8/10

    Conclusion
The Xperia Z1 offers the best photography experience of any Sony smartphone, but it's not quite good enough to topple our current favourite device, the Nokia Lumia 1020.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 review

    Plus

    • Plenty of decent software refinements
    • Battery life with Stamina mode
    • Solid build quality
    • Power
    • Fun camera features
    • Waterproof

    Minus

    • Display not best in class
    • Seems larger than it perhaps needs to be
    • Device can get very hot
    • Camera not as far ahead as we'd hoped

Conclusion There's a lot to love about the Sony Xperia Z1. It's a valiant effort, but not infallible. We like the the design overall, it's a smart-looking device that exhibits plenty of quality and there's stacks of power under the hood of that 5-inch HD display. It's the power that really shows off, as the Z1 skips through anything you can throw at it, but there are niggles: the display isn't the best in class, it gets too hot when you push it in the processor stakes, and all the efforts in the camera department don't seem to really bring huge gains. It's saved by a user experience that's well refined and a battery life that's surprisingly good given the specs. But, as we've found, the Sony Xperia Z1 isn't the out-and-out winner in this class based on all its fancy specs. In short: the original Z is bettered here, but in the fast-paced landscape of mobile phones it's not the best of the best. The physical size is chunky - a little bit too much for our liking, and we think others will feel the same; either go for one-handed comfortable use or super-sized Galaxy Note size - and the presence of lots of capable competitors out there means the Z1, despite all its positives, doesn't shine as brightly as its spec sheet would suggest.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 Android phone

    Plus

    • Waterproof and dust-resistant
    • Camera works well in low light
    • Smooth software & good performance

    Minus

    • Screen has poor viewing angles
    • Questionable ergonomics
    • Back glass scratches too easily

ConclusionThe Sony Xperia Z1 boasts an attractive, glass-back design, a fully waterproof body and an impressive 20-megapixel camera. It's let down by poor ergonomics and a display with mediocre viewing angles, but remains a worthy choice overall.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 review

    Plus

Stylish sturdy design, very powerful, vibrant HD screen, brilliant camera, waterproof

    Minus

      Pricey, prone to scratches

ConclusionThe Xperia Z1 is Sony's best smartphone yet. Its scratch-prone body and custom Android skin let it down, but its 20.7MP camera and smooth performance make it a decent contender against other high-end smartphones.

  • Sony Xperia Z1 review

Conclusion Sony has upgraded its fantastic Xperia Z. The Xperia Z1 feels nicer but is unfortunately bigger and heavier. It's a powerhouse with an all-round impressive specification. Easily one of the best Android handsets around but the high price tag taints this slightly.
