  • Seagate Desktop HDD .15 (ST4000DM000) 4000GB HDD Review

Conclusion  Seagate has been hard at work over the last few months, and now that Computex is over, we are beginning to see products launch left and right from the storage giant. The Desktop HDD .15 launched in April of this year, and takes storage capacity to another level.  Using just four platters, Seagate was able to pack four terabytes into a 3.5" form factor, instead of the five used in competing products. Of course, Seagate did have a few trade-offs to make, and chose to slow the drive down to 5900RPM to maintain data integrity. As technology progresses, we will see Seagate ramp up the spindle speed and offer drives of this magnitude in much faster 7200RPM speeds. To offset the lower RPM, areal density is another area Seagate has really stepped up their game, offering an industry leading 625GB/sq. in. At this point in the game, mechanical drives have been relocated to backup operations as a secondary drive on your desktop system, or even thrown on a sled in your favorite NAS appliance. Seagate has embraced this concept, designing the Desktop HDD .15 to use less power, creating less heat and even less noise than preceding drives. All of this was done with the average consumer in mind, and to cement Seagate's future in the storage marketplace. Pricing of the Seagate Desktop HDD .15 4TB is set at $189.99 USD with high availability. This effectively removes all competition from the market when it comes to high capacity drives, as the next best thing cost $120 more currently.

    Lagringstest: SSD, HDD eller SSHD

    Fördelar:
+ Lågt pris, + Mycket hög kapacitet, + Tyst

    Nackdelar:

Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB vs. Western Digital WD Black 4 TB Hard Drive Review

    Conclusion
The WD Black 4 TB and the Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB are not direct competitors, since the first spins at 7,200 rpm and the latter, at 5,900 rpm. The model from WD is also significantly more expensive than the model from Seagate. Another important information to be aware of is warranty: Wester Digital offers a five-year warranty, while Seagate offers only a two-year warranty. Nevertheless, this review is a good opportunity to fully understand what you get by buying a more expensive product. Throughout our tests, the Western Digital WD Black 4 TB exhibited a very good level of performance, beating the Seagate Desktop HDD in the tests using the CrystalDiskMark. However, in HD Tune, both drives achieved the same performance level in the average speed test. This means that, while the WD Black 4 TB is faster in random writes and reads (which is expected, due to its higher rotational speed and lower access time), this superiority is smaller in sequential access of large files. We should recommend the WD Black 4 TB drive, but it is significantly more expensive than the Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB. So, the latter can be a better buy for those who are looking for the best value in a 4 TB hard disk drive, especially if it will not be used as a boot drive.

    Svenska HDD-Guiden: Seagate Desktop HDD 4TB (ST4000DM000)

    Utmärkelser:

    Fördelar:

    • Billig

    Negativ:

    Seagate Desktop HDD.15 Review (ST4000DM000)

    Plus

    • Offered in 4TB capacity
    • Drops power needs without sacrificing too much performance

    Minus

    • Lower performance due to 5,900 RPM spindle speed
    • 2 year warranty is a bit low

Conclusion The Seagate Desktop HDD ships in a 4TB capacity and is the company's updated offering in what has been known as their Barracuda line. Dubbed with generation-specific branding, the Desktop HDD.15 provides users with a low power consumption option, as quoted power figures hit just 5W in typical idle operation and 7.5W for an overall average. Beyond that, the drive features 180MB/s of sustained throughput and 5.16ms for an average latency response time. The power and performance figures are achieved by Seagate's implementation of a 5,900 RPM spindle speed, versus the more commonly appropriated 7,200 RPM speed. The 5,900 RPM speed selection means that the Seagate Desktop HDD will be a reliable performer that doesn't rack up energy costs. While its target users aren't those looking for the most explosive performance, that criterion is still significant to some consumers. In our tests we found the 4TB Seagate HDD.15 perform surprisingly well in the group of other 7,200RPM hard drives, with the exception of the Hitachi 7K4000 that dominated the group. In mixed workloads the HDD.15 frequently fell into the middle of the pack and sequential read transfer performance came in about 15MB/s below the class leader. With more desktops switching toward flash for boot drives and hosting applications, the demand for faster bulk storage is starting to lean towards lower cost or greater power savings being the big driving factors. In that category, a slightly slower 5,900RPM drive that meets most of the performance requirements can start to compete with 7,200RPM models when it comes to total cost of ownership.
