The premium end of the compact system camera market is now looking extremely interesting. This new camera competes much more closely with the Olympus OM-D and Sony NEX-7 than the Fuji X-Pro1 was able to. As such, other manufacturers are likely to carefully watch Fuji's proposition.Currently, Nikon and Canon don't have anything in this niche segment of the market, while Panasonic's cameras arguably sit just underneath. It'll be interesting what kind of responses we see to the camera in the coming year. With the X-E1, Fuji has brought the next evolution of the X series of interchangeable lens cameras. As the system is set to grow in the coming year, we can see this camera appealing to a large group of people.

    Design: 9/10
    Features: 9/10
    Ease-of-use: 10/10
    Image quality: 10/10
    Value for money: 9/10

Smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper than the X-Pro1, whilst offering the same outstanding and image quality and impeccable handling, there's certainly an awful lot to like about the new Fujifilm X-E1. The main sacrifice is the removal of the innovative Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder, replaced instead by one of the highest resolution and best electronic viewfinders currently available - indeed the X-E1's viewfinder is so good that we hardly missed using the X-Pro1's optical finder. Although not as fast as some compact system cameras (most notably the Olympus OM-D E-M5), the X-E1 is certainly responsive enough to capture most candid moments, although we'd probably stop short at out-and-out sports photography.

    Fujifilm X-E1

•Unique camera design makes you want to take pictures
•Excellent JPEGs, little need to shoot raw most of the time
•Reliable metering and AWB systems, good color (with choice of 'film modes')
•Dials for exposure controls allow for easy check of settings by glancing at the top deck, particularly with prime lenses
•Impressive image quality at all ISO settings - good resolution and low noise
•Built-in flash is handy for fill lighting in a pinch
•Film-simulations offer quick access to different color modes and black and white filters
•Use of electronic viewfinder simplifies interface while maintaining most important features
•Quick menu gives fast access to most digital controls not covered by dials or buttons
•Built-in level helps when capturing landscapes
•Various bracketing modes are easy to set via the Drive button
    •Relatively quiet shutter
    •Excellent available prime lenses

•Built-in level isn't always as accurate as we'd like
•Relatively slow AF makes photographing children more difficult
•Framerates in continuous shooting mode aren't completely consistent
•Camera disables RAW shooting without warning in some bracketing modes
•Relatively low-resolution rear LCD compared to some peers
•Panorama mode can result in visible banding in plain tones
•Auto ISO often chooses too slow a shutter speed (specifically problematic with the longer primes)
•Minimal control available in video mode
•Continuous drive mode saves files with a different name, sorting them to the bottom
•Large and chunky build won't suit everyone

    Fujifilm X-E1

The Fujifilm X-E1 is the second mirrorless model from the company to use the X-mount. It was launched in September 2012 and has the same rangefinder aesthetic and analogue controls as its forerunner the X-Pro 1. In many ways the X-E1 can be seen as a…
