  • Grand Theft Auto IV was easily the most popular game of 2008, but is it worthy of the hype?

To this day, Grand Theft Auto seems almost like a serendipitous fluke to me, a fascinating but improbable tale of two incredibly ambitious brothers almost stumbling into their third-in-sequence megahit by tapping a niche freeform legacy reaching back to David Braben and Ian Bell's seminal 1984 space-trading game "Elite". How Grand Theft Auto morphed from a plotless arcade racer (originally dubbed "Race N Chase") about stealing and selling cars for profit, into an epic crime drama with all the moral subtext of a Coppola or Scorsese blockbuster, is one for the history books. It's also a series that's managed to galvanize and, in some cases, rabidly polarize people over the ethical legitimacy of its violent and sexually explicit content, which to be fair is probably tamer than a lot of HBO dramas and comedy acts. Wherever you stand, you have to admire the brass of the Houser brothers, from GTA IV's opening nose-thumbing BDSM clips or Niko's request for sex by asking his girlfriend Michelle for "hot coffee", to the pumped up TV show "The Men's Room with Bas and Jeremy" "Come to Liberty City," teases Bas Rutten (voiced by the actual super-buff Dutch martial artist) at one point. "And you can get strong in this weak world."

  • Grand Theft Auto IV är inte ett spel, det är ett annat liv.

    Plus:
    Allt är förbättrat sedan föregångarna.

    Minus:
Bilfysiken är en aning svår att bemästra.

  • Living the American Dream.

    Conclusion
Grand Theft Auto III was a revolutionary title, one that inspired a whole new generation of 3D action games. Grand Theft Auto IV is just as big a leap forward, though perhaps in subtler ways, and sets a new benchmark for open-world games. Everything in GTA IV works in harmony. The story would be nothing without the city; the city gains realism from the physics engine; the physics complement the improved AI; the AI would make no sense without the new cover system. And on and on. There is no one major weak aspect.A "10" is not a score we give out very often. In fact, the last time we gave a 10 to a console game was Soul Calibur in 1999. A 10 doesn't mean a game is perfect -- it means a game is pushing boundaries, expanding a genre, and doing many things to a level so far above and beyond its competitors that they overshadows any flaws. Certainly, GTA IV has some issues, the most noticeable being the occasional flaw in the cover system, but there are many more pieces of GTA IV that are better than anything I've seen from a game in the past decade. We don't give 10s often -- just to games that merit the score.

Niko Bellic, Grand Theft Auto IV's bruiser from the former Eastern Bloc, is a stone-cold couch potato, a desperate online dater with dead-on aim, and a chronic websurfer who could kill you in a hand-to-hand Krav Maga brawl. Fresh off the boat, he's an ill

    Plus

Genre-defining action sequences, Best GTA story yet, Contnuous indoor/outdoor environments

    Minus

All too familiar, Nagging friends, Jarring graphical glitches, Antiquated movement and camera controls, Takes 15-20 hours to get to the good stuff

ConclusionVery few games can be considered “disappointments” for failing to innovate the medium, so that says something very positive about its credentials. GTA IV has more content for your buck than pretty much anything else out there, and it has more variety, more freedom, and more soul than any other game this generation. But that makes its missteps all the more heartbreaking. It takes a very powerful and imposing emperor to convince everyone that he’s wearing the most glorious clothes ever, even when his junk is dangling out for all the world to see.

    The Good:

    • Upgraded graphics may be subtle in places, but they're very impressive
    • Better mechanics for gun play and fighting
    • Easier to get around Liberty City
    • Huge amount of content and side missions
    • Amazing cut scenes and vocal work
    • A story with better characters than most movies
    • Strong multiplayer
    • Play time pretty damn close to unlimited
    • Everything about Grand Theft Auto has been upgraded, tweaked, and polished

    The Bad:

    • The phone can be very hard to read at times
    • The camera could use work when driving
    • The frame rate is hard to get used to, and is often low
    • Sixaxis controls are weak, and will likely be turned off by most players
    • The missions can be repetitive at times, although just when you get bored, there will be a surprise
    • The soundtrack isn't quite as strong as previous games
    • Fitting everything you want to do in the game into your real-life schedule

    The Ugly:

    • The game comes with an almost unbearable amount of baggage.
The politicians, the media, and the game reviewers are all twisting
themselves in a knot over a very well-done piece of gaming. Clear your
mind of the hype, and try to enjoy one of the best experiences of the
      year.
