    • Sleek, unique design
    • 1GHz dual-core CPU
    • 4-inch display
    • Impressive rear camera
    • NFC capabilities

    • Sloppy front camera
    • Scratch-prone body
    • Poor multi-tabbed browsing
    • Stiff camera button
    • Fiddly micro SIM holder

A handset that will have owners planning for the future, the Sony Xperia P is packed with enough high-end specs to ensure it remains one of the most impressive devices within its price bracket for a long time to come, and will keep users appeased and free from handset envy for the foreseeable future.Add to this the inbuilt NFC capabilities - a feature that is to become increasingly prominent in the near future - and the Sony Xperia P quickly marks itself out as a standout performer that is bridging the expectations and blurring the boundaries of mid and high-end handsets.

    • Display with outstanding outdoor visibility
    • Camera is really good
    • Great in-call audio quality

    • Gingerbread at launch
    • Display colors could have been more accurate

  • Sony Xperia P

    • Unibody feels solid
    • Plenty of power under the hood
    • Good camera performance

    • Poor battery performance
    • Display doesn't look natural
    • Some UI quirks make this phone feel a little dated

Conclusion Overall the Sony Xperia P is something of a mixed bag. Our experience with the Xperia S tells us that the design will divide opinion. The core hardware means this is a reasonably powerful device and the way it handles everyday tasks is a testament to that, with no complaints in that respect. But there are some elements that just seem to get in the way. Launching on Gingerbread is a disappointment for Android fans and some of Sony's design choices when it comes to the user interface are a little disappointing. We don't mind manufacturers skinning Android, but when it makes something like the calendar more difficult to view, we have to question what benefit there is for the end user. Finally the battery life and a screen that doesn't look entirely natural leave us with a device that, despite exhibiting great build quality in that metal body, starts to feel decidedly average. An update to Android 4 here and the choice application of, erm, apps from Google Play and the Sony Xperia P starts to feel much more appealing. The Sony Xperia P is a phone that performs, but could be better.

  • Sony Xperia P review

Great camera, light yet sturdy design, good battery life, NFC enabled

Screen isn't as bright as we'd expected, runs on Gingerbread not Ice Cream Sandwich, full of Sony bloatware

ConclusionThe Xperia P is a decent mid-priced smartphone, but its solid design and amazing camera is hampered by the device's outdated operating system.

  • Sony Xperia P review

Conclusion The Xperia P is a more user-friendly sized, better designed and more attractively priced version of the Xperia S. Although the specifications aren't astounding and the software is yet to be brought into 2012, we like the device. Highlights are the decent screen and excellent camera but if you have a bit more cash to spend, the HTC One S is a better option.

    Hands-on: Sony Xperia P

ConclusionHere's the key highlights of the Xperia P, followed by a video demonstration of the Xperia smartphone. Overall, the Xperia P feels like a multimedia-centric variant of its cousin, especially with its WhiteMagic technology and SmartDock compatibility. The phones in the NXT range look almost identical to each other in terms of design and construction (save for the screen size) and we have to say that the Xperia P looks and feels as polished as its flagship cousin, the Xperia S. The device is light at 120g and pretty thin at less than 11mm thick, which proved to be an easy and natural fit in our hands. The Sony Xperia P will be available in black, silver and red at its launch. Global availability is said to start from Q2 2012 onwards although details on its price has not been revealed yet. Most certainly, it will be priced at a lower price point than the Xperia S and higher than the Xperia U.
